My opinion about increasing drilling in the US is as follows:

As long as oil is at a tolerable level (say $150/barrel or less), let's allow the middle east to drain their reserves of their crude until it's gone.

Even during the big oil bubble caused by speculators recently, OPEC went public and on record that oil should be $75 per barrel based on supply and demand at that time, and they had no idea why it was so high. Of course the bubble eventually burst which only then proved it was a speculative bubble.

OPEC wants oil to be at a level that keeps alternative fuels and energy off the radar. They don't want it high.

During the bubble, Saudi Arabia was putting out oil at a rate that exceeds current Libya and Saudi combined, which shows that 100% stoppage in Libya could easy be covered by Saudi production. Again, since OPEC doesn't want oil above 90's a barrel, OPEC will crank up supply.
