For those of you who didn't know, the McDonald's Big Mac was invented by Jim Delligatti and had it's debut in Uniontown, Pennsylvania in 1967. The Big Mac celebrated it's 40th birthday last year:

In celebration of the Big Mac, a museum has been opened in North Huntingdon, PA:

I think Jim may have actually "invented" it elsewhere, he had several McDonald's franchise stores at the time around Pittsburgh, but most references on the Internet seem to imply it was served at the Uniontown restaurant first.

Here's a timeline borrowed from the Big Mac Museum web site.

Invented in Uniontown yes. Invented by Deligatti, no. The unsung hero was the police chief of Uniontown at the time. He'd come up around closing time and make his own sandwiches. Guess word got around and they became popular. Still an original worker or two around that tell the story to a friendly ear.

Great info!

I tried Googling to find out who the Chief of Police was in 1967, any chance you know his name? It'd be nice to give credit where credit is due.
